While it’s clear that the Edmonton Oilers may have to address a new problem to get rid of one of their own, don’t expect GM Stan Bowman to make a move for Matias Maccelli from the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to one announcer, that’s another problem the Oilers don’t want.
In a recent episode of the Got Yer’ Back podcastOilers host Rob Brown acknowledged that no trade involving Andrew Mangiapane will be easy. The Oilers may have to swallow a bad deal. But rumors of a deal for Ryan Strome or Maccelli from the Anaheim Ducks or Maple Leafs seem unlikely.
“From what I understand, there’s nothing going on here; nothing happens tonight,” Ryan Rishaug said. “I’ve been looking into this a little bit. You hear Anaheim talk about a potential strong return. Some people are floating in Toronto, others in Vancouver. That’s why we’re even talking about young players who could potentially play in the top six.”
He added: “But when you look at it, the combination of him and Frederic just hasn’t worked – it’s been a train wreck. I’m not sure what else to say. He’s healthy again and it feels like this is now basically done and cooked with Mangiapane.”
Brown replied:
“It’s been a disaster. Especially considering how much this issue has been talked about. Look at his role: He was a fourth-line player in Washington. His career went in the wrong direction. Is there a trade involving Mangiapane? You’re taking over someone else’s problem. You don’t get anything good in return when you move someone who makes $3.6 million and is constantly being cut healthily.”
Laugh: “A constant scratch – Maccelli is in Toronto.”
In other words, there’s no reason for the Oilers to make a one-for-one deal like this. Sure, it’s moving on from Mangiapane, but it’s just bringing in a winger who hasn’t played regularly.
