At least 40 people died, with scores more injured, after a bomb attack committed by a paraglider at a festival in the Chaung U -municipality of Central Myanmar. The Thadingyut Full Moon Festival was in full swing, with hundreds of attendees present when the horrific incident took place.
The army is supposed to sit behind the bombing, so that around 80 people have remained injured. A member of the organizing committee of the event, which wanted to remain anonymous due to security care, suggested that the army was involved. She revealed that the crowd had gathered for both the festival and an anti-junta demonstration around 7 pm on Monday (October 6) when the bombs were dropped, which resulted in more than 40 fatalities and about 80 injuries. Speaking with AFP, she said: “The committee warned people and a third of the crowd managed to flee. But immediately a motor -driven paraglider flew right over the crowd and dropped two bombs in the middle of the meeting.”
In a horrifying account, she described that children of their families were torn. Although she was not present on the spot, she joined the funerals the next day.
She added: “Children were completely torn apart.”
As soon as the paraglider had left the city, the locals hurried to the scene to help survivors and tend to the injuries. She stated: “From this morning we still collected body parts from the ground – pieces of meat, limbs, parts of bodies that were blown apart.”
A local, who did not want to remain further mentioned, confirmed the large number of victims. He described how people tried to flee when spotting the paraglider above the head.
He remembered: “While I said to people,” please don’t run, “the paramotor dropped two bombs.
“Two of my comrades were killed just in front of me. There were more those who died in front of me.”
On Tuesday he attended funerals for nine friends who lost their lives. A local news source also reported that 40 people died in the attack.
Myanmar has been engaged in a civil war since the military coup in 2021, with armed factions rising against the Junta.
