– Owners of 2018-2022 Honda Odyssey minivans should be aware of a federal investigation opened by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
NHTSA has received 18 complaints and other injury reports regarding the sudden and unintentional deployment of side curtains and/or side thorax airbags.
The study includes more than 441,000 Odyssey minivans.
Without warning, the side curtain or side thorax airbags deployed, usually when the Odyssey minivans were in motion. But one driver complained that the airbags deployed while refueling the minivan.
Some Honda Odyssey owners complained that the airbags suddenly deployed after the vehicles drove over a bump, pothole or curb.
A few of those complaints about the deployment of the Honda Odyssey airbag:
“I was driving in the Sequoia National Forest and hit a small dip/erosion hole in front of a gate at about 2 to 3 miles per hour. I slumped slightly in the car. The airbags deployed. Mild friction burns my wrist. Honda told me this is my fault and their airbag system is just deploying [sic] when he was supposed to, and ended up just filling out an insurance claim.
“While the vehicle was being operated on a highway, the vehicle was traveling at a normal speed under normal weather conditions while the side airbag curtains on both the driver and passenger sides spontaneously deployed. Side airbags caused temporary visual and hearing damage from deployment, making operation of the vehicle on the highway extremely dangerous to safely navigate to the shoulder of the highway to a place of safety.”
“We hit a pothole on a 30-35 degree city street and this caused the airbags on both sides of the van to deploy. There was no damage to the van, rim or tire. In addition, when the passenger airbag deployed, my wife suffered a burn on her arm.”
Minivan owners also complain about the distraction caused by unnecessary airbag inflation, and certain Odyssey owners complained about how the inflated airbags blocked the use of mirrors.
