Banks across India will remain closed for 15 days in October 2025, including regular weekly Fridays and major festivals, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar.
The closures will impact branch operations during one of the busiest festival periods of the year, although digital banking services will continue uninterrupted.
The RBI-mandated closures include all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, which equates to nine non-working days.
Moreover, banks will close for six major festivals in different states, including Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath Puja.
Physical bank branches will be closed on Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), which coincides with Vijaya Dashami in several states. Other major shutdowns include Maha Navami on October 1 in states like Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha and Tamil Nadu.
During the Diwali festival period, there will be extended lockdowns in several states between October 18 and 23, including Dhanteras, Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.
Schools in several states will also observe extended holidays during the festival period. Telangana has announced a 13-day lockdown from September 21 to October 3 for the Dasara holiday, while West Bengal has extended the Durga Puja holiday to October 6.
Bihar will see school closures from September 27 to October 2, with several districts extending them till October 5. Schools in Uttar Pradesh will remain closed on October 1 and 2 for Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti.
Bank customers are advised to complete essential transactions requiring bank visits before the holiday period.
Services such as depositing cheques, updating the passbook and withdrawing large amounts of cash will not be available during closure periods.
The RBI has confirmed that when banking deadlines fall on public holidays, processing will be adjusted to the next business day.
Regional differences in holidays reflect state-specific festivals. For example, Chhath Puja on October 28 will result in lockdowns mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti will be observed mainly in the northern states on October 7.
Although physical branches will remain closed on these dates, customers will have uninterrupted access to online banking, mobile banking applications and most ATMs. The RBI guidelines are uniformly applicable to public sector banks, private sector banks, cooperative banks, rural banks and community banks across the country.
