Michigan is currently blanketed in snow and cold, so I headed there Washtenaw Golf Club to get some swings on their simulators.
The club has three GolfZon stations with a variety of simulated courses to play, but I was just interested in working with my seven irons and pitching wedge. My goal this winter is to shorten my overly long backswing, which I hope will result in more consistent contact when I return to regular play this spring.
The nice thing about a simulator setup – as opposed to a normal range – is that I can watch a slow-motion video of each swing for feedback. It really helps to link feeling to results. By the end of the session I had a much more compact swing (although still not great) and was achieving better results.
The hardest part was making the transition and the sequel feel so ‘right’. From a much shorter backswing position, the second half of the swing doesn’t feel right.
More reps will make it better, I’m sure. I plan to visit the simulator regularly over the next month.

The weather will be terribly cold in the coming days. Weather forecasters are warning of “exploding trees,” a phenomenon occurring in parts of Michigan due to rapid freezing of sap.
That’s not great.
