History Today: When OpenAI launched ChatGPT, it revolutionized the way we see AI

On November 30, 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, a breakthrough in generative AI that rapidly transformed communications, education, and digital work.

In 1982, Michael Jackson’s Thriller debuted worldwide and set new standards in music and multimedia.

Barbados gained independence from Britain in 1966 and began its journey as a sovereign Caribbean nation.

And in 1939, the Soviet Union attacked Finland, starting the Winter War.

We view these events as part of From Firstpost

The release of ChatGPT

On November 30, 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence chatbot built on the GPT-3.5 architecture.

While AI tools already existed, none had achieved the level of accessibility, fluidity, and human-like interaction that ChatGPT offered on day one.

Within hours, social media timelines were filled with screenshots of conversations, code examples, essays, jokes, poems and explanations generated by the model – and within days the chatbot had invaded classrooms, workplaces, media workflows and political debates.

Before the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI had built previous models in the GPT (ā€œGenerative Pretrained Transformerā€) family: GPT-1 in 2018, GPT-2 in 2019, and GPT-3 in 2020.

Each model marked an increase in size, training data, and language skills.

However, these models were primarily used through APIs, research collaborations, and controlled demonstrations.

ChatGPT marked a decisive shift: instead of releasing a model as an API, OpenAI released a conversational interface trained by reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF).

This optimization process made the AI’s responses more consistent with the user’s intent, more talkative, and better able to follow instructions.

For the first time, users could talk to an AI system without the need for programming knowledge or specialized technical skills.

Within five days, ChatGPT had surpassed 1 million users, making it the fastest-growing consumer platform in history at the time.

By January 2023, it had reached an estimated 100 million monthly active users.

Teachers debated its implications for assignments and academic integrity; journalists assessed its accuracy and reliability; companies experimented with internal deployment; and developers used it for debugging and rapid prototyping.

People quickly realized that ChatGPT wasn’t just something new; it was a tool that could generate structured documents, summarize technical material, and simulate dialogue in a way that felt remarkably natural.

It could write Python code, generate SQL queries, compose legal-style text, translate between languages, explain scientific theories, and provide step-by-step instructions for a wide range of topics.

Education saw some of the first disruptions. Many teachers expressed concern that students could use ChatGPT to complete essays or assignments, forcing universities to reconsider academic integrity policies.

Media and journalism began integrating generative AI into workflows, from transcription to investigative support. While questions surrounding accuracy and hallucinations persisted, the tool quickly became part of newsroom workflows.

Software engineering was also changing rapidly. ChatGPT can generate functions, refactor code, and explain errors, speeding up development cycles. Companies began implementing AI pair programming tools, building on the success of GitHub Copilot, which itself used previous GPT models.

Governments and regulators quickly took notice. The European Union has accelerated work on the AI law; the United States began exploring federal standards for AI safety; and countries around the world explored how generative AI could impact labor, education, cybersecurity, and public information.

Although the version released on November 30, 2022 was based on GPT-3.5, subsequent releases expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities. Launched in 2023, GPT-4 offers more advanced reasoning, better reliability, and improved performance in academic and professional benchmarks.

Over time, ChatGPT evolved from a research preview to a central part of broader AI ecosystems that include multimodal capabilities, tool usage, browsing, image generation, and specialized versions trained for professional industries.

The cultural impact of ChatGPT’s release has been enormous.

Universities introduced courses on rapid engineering, a term that barely existed before 2022. Companies explored how automation and AI augmentation could reshape entire industries.

In late 2023 and beyond, generative AI systems were embedded in search engines, office suites, and mobile applications.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller is released worldwide

On November 30, 1982, Michael Jackson released Thriller, the album that would eventually become the best-selling album of all time, with estimated sales of over 70 million copies.

Produced by Quincy Jones, the album combines pop, rock, funk and R&B, creating a sound that redefines modern pop music.

Singles such as ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Beat It’ and the title track ‘Thriller’ dominated the global charts, while the album’s innovative music videos helped transform MTV into a cultural force.

Thriller marked a turning point not only in Jackson’s career, but also in the global music industry. It broke racial barriers by becoming one of the first albums by a black artist to receive heavy rotation on MTV, opening doors for future artists of color.

The album also introduced a new standard in production quality and visual storytelling. With its cinematic videos, choreographed performances and groundbreaking studio techniques, Thriller helped create the modern multimedia pop star.

Independence of Barbados

On November 30, 1966, Barbados formally became independent from the United Kingdom after more than three centuries of colonial rule.

The transition followed a decades-long process of political reform, including the expansion of self-government and democratic institutions.

Errol Barrow, leader of the Barbados Labor Party, became the first Prime Minister of the newly independent nation and directed its early economic and diplomatic policies.

Independence did not completely cut ties with Britain; Barbados remained a member of the Commonwealth, and then-British Queen Elizabeth II remained the ceremonial head of state until the nation transitioned to a republic in 2021.

After independence, Barbados focused heavily on diversifying its economy, with sugar production shifting to tourism, financial services and manufacturing. The island developed a reputation for political stability, high literacy rates and strong public institutions.

Barbados’ independence is of great importance in the broader history of decolonization in the Caribbean. It represented both the culmination of regional movements for self-government and a shift towards a modern state based on parliamentary democracy.

The beginning of the Winter War

On November 30, 1939, the Soviet Union launched a full-scale invasion of Finland, marking the beginning of the conflict known as the Winter War.

The Soviet leadership sought territorial concessions to secure Leningrad’s defense, but negotiations with Finland had failed.

The invasion began just months after World War II broke out in Europe, making it one of the first expansions of the conflict beyond German aggression.

Despite being vastly outnumbered in manpower and weapons, the Finnish forces put up a stubborn resistance. The conflict became infamous for the harsh Arctic conditions under which it was fought, with temperatures dropping below -40°C.

Finnish ski troops, using guerrilla tactics and intimate knowledge of the terrain, inflicted disproportionate losses on the Soviet forces.

The war ended in March 1940 with the Moscow Peace Treaty, in which Finland ceded significant territory but retained its sovereignty.

Internationally, the invasion led to the expulsion of the Soviet Union from the League of Nations – a rare and severe diplomatic punishment.
