Even if a driver is not constantly checking the mileage markers, the system at the rear continues to work. The exit numbers on most highways are directly linked to the kilometer markers, making it easy to calculate the distance between the exits. As a shared reference point, these markings are used for everything from roadside assistance to traffic information.

Mileage markers remain essential for those days when GPS or technology fails or provides a vague location. When a driver is stuck in an unfamiliar place, he can simply look at the mileage marker and explain his location to emergency services, rather than having to rely on obscure or unfamiliar landmarks for help.

Even states that use variations, such as road-based post-mile systems, maintain the same underlying purpose, which is to provide an accurate, repeatable way to describe location. The continued use of mileage markers reflects their role as a reliable backup for digital tools and as a basis for communications that work regardless of your vehicle or destination.
