High alert in Kerala’s Kanhangad After LPG tanker has been destroyed, vacation, traffic tutor in place

A high warning has been declared in Kanhangad after an LPG tank truck near the Koval store on the National Highway was destroyed, which gave rise to emergency measures and a local holiday in surrounding areas.

The accident occurred on Thursday (July 24, 2025) when the tanker, on the way of the Mangaluru LPG factory to Coimbatore, overthrown in a swamp along the road while he tried to make way for a towards a narrow service tile. The piece is part of a continuous national highway development zone. The truck driver has suffered minor injuries and the authorities have confirmed that there was no gas leak.

As a precautionary step, the district disaster management autoritiy explained a local holiday on Friday for all institutions-including schools, Anganwadis and commercial branches within a radius of one kilometer from the Koval store. Departments 18, 19 and 26 of Kanhangad South and Aingoth fall within this zone.

Traffic

Vehicle traffic on the national highway from Kanhangad South to Padannakkad will be completely stopped on Friday from 8 a.m. Alternative routes are arranged for diversified traffic, although officials warned of temporary travel disruption.

Residents in the neighborhood have already been evacuated. The Hosdurg Police and Kanhangad Fire and Rescue Services have jointly issued strict safety instructions. People have instructed to prevent the use of LPG cylinders, to abandon smoking or to use inverters and other electrical appliances, not to start vehicles or try to catch images near the site and to stay away from the accidents zone.

The power supply around the place of the accident was cut off on Friday until the tanker is safely removed.

The operation to lift the tanker starts today at 9 a.m. Authorities insisted on the public to fully cooperate to ensure that the emergency situation is managed without incidents.
