Hidden cameras and earphones: Kazakh couple arrested over alleged $1 million casino scam

A Kazakh couple has been charged for allegedly defrauding a Sydney casino of more than $1 million.
New South Wales Police said a 36-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man traveled to Sydney from Kazakhstan in October and applied for membership at a casino in Barangaroo, in Sydney’s CBD, the same day.

Police were tipped off about the couple after casino staff noticed the woman with a small camera on her shirt last Thursday.

The husband-and-wife couple was arrested at the casino, where police said they found a cell phone with a matching attachment that allows the phone’s camera function to discreetly view, capture or record images, as well as a small, custom-made mirror attachment for the cell phone.

Police allege the pair made multiple visits to the casino over the course of October and November and won a total of $1,179,412.50.

Police say that while their cellphones captured images of the table, the pair communicated through deep-seated earpieces that instructed them to bet on various card games and ultimately defraud the casino.

A search warrant was also executed at their Kent Street property in Sydney, where police said they found other gambling paraphernalia, luxury jewelery and €2,000.
The couple were each accused of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and were brought to court on Friday where bail was refused.
