Colton Herta is mentioned as a test driver for the Cadillac Formula 1 team, and a switch from Indycar to racing in Formula 2 for the American remains a possibility.
Cadillac’s Formula 1 entrance had previously been under the Andretti -and initially intended to run Herta as one of the two racers. But with Herta unable to secure a super permit-de Californier, five points failed to the requirement 40 this season The team has a row of experienced pair of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas for 2026.
To increase his chances of earning the points and to be eligible for a Cadillac racing chair in the future, Herta and TWG Motorsports have investigated the potential to make the switch to the F1 Feeder series next season.

Herta has now been confirmed as a member of Cadillac in a role of test driver. As reported by Racer last weekSeveral F2 teams had contracted the potential of running Herta in the series, but his racing plans remain unconfirmed at this stage.
“I am incredibly excited to become a member of the Cadillac Formula 1 team as a test driver,” said Herta. “This is a dream opportunity, and one that I have been working for a long time. To be part of the entry of Cadillac F1 at such a crucial time, something I could not leave.
“My dream has always been to race in Formula 1, and I see this step as a huge step in that goal. For now my focus is on giving everything I can do to Cadillac F1, to help build a competitive team.”
TWG Motorsports and Cadillac F1 CEO Dan Towriss had talked about trying to create a path for an American driver to race in F1 in the future, but team head Graeme Lowdon says that the talents of Herta will offer sufficient value to the team in his first role.
“We are pleased to welcome Colton Herta as a test driver,” said Lowdon. “Colton is an exceptionally talented racer with proven speed, racing-craft and adulthood that is much further than his years. His experience in American motorsport at the highest level as part of the TWG Motorsport family makes him an ideal fit for this role, and he will bring valuable and fresh insight, perspective and energy to our team while we continue to build for the future.
“Having an American driver who becomes a member of an American Formula 1 team is a hugely important moment, not only for our team, but also for American motorsport as a whole. Colton represents the passion, ambition and competitive spirit that defines the Cadillac Formula 1 team, and we are proud to wear the American flag with us in the world phase in the world phase.”
Sources suggest that an F2 program can still be added to help its super license ambitions, but not guaranteed. With one point that ends at the end of the three -year cycle, Herta will have to collect six superlative points next year if he is eligible for a racing chair of 2027.
If he chooses to race in F2, the series offers 40 points at the top three finishers in its championship, while a top eight finish would be enough for Herta compared to the top six in Indycar. There are three points available for a top 10 -finish – compared to one in Indycar – and Herta could also supplement his total by participating in FP1 sessions for Cadillac next season.
An FP1 outing that a driver sees more than 100 km complete and does not earn fines, bears one super license point.
