The continuous speculation around Connor McDavid’s next contract has reached a fats, but how much of them is it actually worth listening to? According to Elliote Friedman from SportsnetThe answer can be: not much.
When one of the most trusted insiders in the company says that no insider really has the goods about what McDavid is going to do, you know that he does not come up with stories for involvement or traffic. It pays when Friedman is the first, but even he admitted in a recent piece and on his podcast that he has little concrete information to share about McDavid’s negotiations.
That is unusual for one of the most well-connected insiders of hockey, and it underlines an important point-very few people are actually in the room when it comes to these conversations. Even here, the best we can do is compile opinions and information and then make what we believe as logical reports and reactions.
We all only recommend McDavid’s contract
While news comes out that Kirill Kaprizov has rejected $ 128 million, fans in Edmonton are starting to worry a bit about what McDavid could cost. When it is reported that McDavid goes into the season without expansion, the chatter starts to be a real possibility. The overreaction is the natural by -product of a lack of clarity and a fear that the worst could happen.
Outside of analysts, McDavid’s use of the expression “not a term” – which was perhaps a Freudian slip – there has been no reason to worry that he will ultimately not sign another deal with the oilers.
Currently, only Oilers GM Stan Bowman, CEO and President (and the former agent of McDavid) know Jeff Jackson and the Agent Judd Moldaver from McDavid know what is going on. And at the moment Bowman and Jackson may not know very much, or they might be at speed on almost everything. We don’t know that either. All others, no matter how connected they say they are or how final they are in their reports, is not a reliable source of information. They take at most well -considered guesses.
People will keep rumors going on McDavid
Twitter, Reddit and even mainstream media are flooded with “updates” who are actually just shots in the dark about what comes next. Fans desperately looking for insight into these crumbs, but the reality is clear: until one of the four central figures decides to leak something – or a deal is signed – no one outside that inner circle knows the truth.
The collection meals for fans are simple: treat every new ‘report’ about the future of McDavid with a grain of salt. If you hear that he is leaving, understand that those reports are probably fueled by fans in other markets, not someone who is linked to McDavid. So, if you hear that he remains, that is probably a report based in Edmonton in the hope of good news.
Whether he signs in the long term, in the short term or delays a decision, the direction comes directly from McDavid and his camp, nowhere else.
