Heliovaara/Patten hit back with an impressive Nitto ATP Finals opener

Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten made a powerful statement at the Nitto ATP Finals on Monday, kicking off their title bid with an impressive win.

The second seeds saw off Christian Harrison and Evan King 6-4, 6-4 as they returned to the Inalpi Arena for the second year in a row. After falling to the Americans in the Roland Garros quarter-finals earlier this year, Heliovaara and Patten responded with a 64-minute clinic in Turin, dropping just five of 45 service points, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

“We didn’t do much wrong in our service games, we faced one break point in the entire match and got there with a great serve,” Heliovaara said. “It was so nice to be on the field… We were ourselves and enjoyed the moment. I’m just super happy to be here and play well.”

Heliovaara and Patten, who are riding a five-match winning streak after their Paris triumph, still have an outside chance of claiming the ATP’s No. 1 doubles team at the end of the year, presented by PIF awards. They are trying to gain ground on British stars Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool, who fell to Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori in their respective opening matches.

“I never thought I would have one win on Tour, so to have 100 is something incredibly special,” said Patten, who recorded his 100th tour-level win.

After leveling their Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Harrison/King and improving to 1-0 in the John McEnroe Group, Heliovaara and Patten can look ahead to meetings with Joe Salisbury/Neal Skupski and Marcelo Arevalo/Mate Pavic.
