Hardik’s importance to the Indian team was underlined by his standout performances during India’s victorious 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. The all-rounder enjoyed a productive tournament with the bat, scoring consistently at a high strike rate and also making crucial breakthroughs with the ball. His decisive spell in the final against South Africa, where he claimed three wickets in the close overs, proved instrumental in sealing a narrow seven-run victory for India.
Clarke praised Hardik Pandya and said:
“This is an important decision. I watched India play recently and I think Hardik is the most important player in the world in T20 cricket right now. He is my number one buy in T20 cricket. If I had to buy one player, I think it would be Hardik Pandya, especially when you play in Indian conditions. He is important with bat, ball and in the field.” Clarke said in an interview with RevSportz.
Clarke further highlighted Hardik’s leadership value and tactical awareness even without the captaincy. He emphasized that Pandya’s reading of the game and experience could play a defining role in the Indian campaign.
“He is also a great tactician. So I think as a senior player, despite not being the captain, he can help because he reads the game well. I think he is extremely important for India’s success in this campaign. Don’t be surprised if Hardik becomes Player of the Series,” he added.
The Indian all-rounder’s overall T20I figures further strengthen Clarke’s rating, with Hardik boasting over 2,000 runs and over 100 wickets in the format over 129 matches.
Clarke also turned his attention to India’s spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, stating that a fully fit Bumrah could give India a significant edge over their rivals, especially Australia, who are facing fitness issues among their leading fast bowlers.
“That could be significant and the biggest difference. Look, Bumrah is the best. There’s no doubt about that. And he’s fit. If you look at the Australian team, we don’t have Pat Cummins due to injury, Mitchell Starc has retired and Josh Hazlewood I don’t think will start the tournament. So against someone like Bumrah, fully fit and ready to rock, that could be significant and the main difference,” Clarke said.
Bumrah was India’s standout performer during their 2024 T20 World Cup victory, finishing as Player of the Tournament after taking 15 wickets at a remarkable economy rate of less than 4.20.
Besides Pandya and Bumrah, Clarke also mentioned Kuldeep Yadav as a key weapon for India in the upcoming World Cup. The former Australian skipper praised the left-arm spinner’s ability to take wickets and backed him to play a decisive role. Kuldeep played a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup title in 2024, claiming 10 wickets in five matches
“I have been supporting him for a long time because I think he is a superstar who has not had enough opportunities in all three formats: Kuldeep Yadav. I think he is ready to go. He is a wicket-taker. That is the key for me. I think for someone like Kuldeep Yadav, that is his biggest strength because there is no better way to stop them scoring than to get them out,” the former Australia captain said.
