This was said by Gujarat Titans head coach Parthiv Patel Gill was backed by the selectors and team management in T20Is as they wanted a solid player who could serve as captain in all formats. The Punjab batsman is already leading India in Tests and ODIs. However, the former Indian wicketkeeper noted that despite getting plenty of opportunities, Gill did not perform as expected.
“India was hoping to find a solid player who could captain in all three formats. He was given a fair chance. Maybe he hasn’t contributed as per expectations. There are still five matches left in the New Zealand series. I think the decision has been made in the South Africa series itself. The talent pool is so big at the moment, so there will always be talk about who is not in the squad. Instead, I think we should empower those who are there and put some positive energy behind them. It’s a very strong team and India will definitely start as favourites.” he said on Jay Thadeshwar’s podcast.
Patel, who closely follows domestic cricket, said he was impressed by the number of talented players in the country. He backed the Men in Blue to dominate world cricket in the coming years, winning many ICC titles along the way.
“The kind of talent that India has, I will be very surprised if India doesn’t win 75% of the ICC trophies. The way the players play, the way the system is, that’s the most important part. I don’t think there will come a time when India won’t win ICC trophies. The system in BCCI’s COE, the domestic system, given everything we see, will dominate world cricket for many years to come,” he mused.
