Hayden Hackney: Manchester United target wanted by Newcastle United – Man United news and transfer news | The People’s Person

Manchester United had their eye on Hayden Hackney in the summer, but the player ultimately stayed at Middlesbrough.

The Englishman rose through the ranks at the North Yorkshire club before breaking into the first team in 2022. The 23-year-old has since made 110 appearances for Boro, scoring 10 goals.

His performances have caused a stir across Europe and have also attracted attention at the Theater of Dreams.

United reportedly tried to sign him in the summer to strengthen their midfield, but their efforts ultimately failed to bear fruit.

A cost-effective option for the job

It is expected that the Red Devils will pay special attention to midfield in 2026, especially because that position is currently the weak point of the team.

Recent reports suggest the Premier League giants could reconsider their interest in Hackney next year.

While the likes of Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson are also on United’s wishlist, the Middlesbrough midfielder represents a cost-effective option for the role.

The Red Devils have kept a close eye on Hackney’s situation this season, but it now looks like they will face stiff competition in the race for the youngster.

Newcastle want Hackney

According to TBR FootballNewcastle United have joined the race to sign Hackney in 2026. Recently, journalist Graeme Bailey said: “As Boro face a serious promotional challenge, Hayden Hackney is emerging as the cornerstone of their endeavour.”

“However, I am told that Boro have little intention of letting Hackney leave in January. Last season they sold Emmanuel Latte-Lath, which Michael Carrick believes cost them the chance of promotion, and they have no intention of doing that again.

“That said, Boro’s resolve will be aided if Hackney’s form continues to develop and there could be some very big offers in January.

“However, Boro know that the only way they can keep him is if they get promoted, and the only way to do that is to keep him.”

United took on the Magpies this summer and signed Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko right from under their noses. The Red Devils then hope to repeat the trick with Hackney.

However, the Englishman is not lacking in options, with Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham and Brentford also in the race. Porto are reportedly interested in the youngster, while he also has admirers at Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt and Atalanta.
