Matt Currie’s 3 attempts that have led to Edinburgh Munster defeated during the weekend of 28 February 2025
sent me a rabbit hole.
I knew that the last hat trick of attempts scored by an Edinburgh player by Darcy Graham against Bulls was in September 2022 and that Boan Venter’s was in January of the same year by Boan Venter against Ospreys, but that was for my surface knowledge and I thought we would do a closer look.
I have been able to go back to 2001 and the full list is below, but before we get there, there are a few things that my count found that are worth mentioning.
The Edinburgh profit percentage when we score a hat trick is 81%. We lost 3 games when our players have scored 3 attempts. The two above that of Graham and Venter and then far back in 2012 when Munster happened to be the opposition and the man who exceeded the Try line 3 times was Tim Visser.
There have been 16 seasons in that reach of 2001-2025 where no hat trick was scored.
Only Tim Visser has scored a hat trick from Hattricks.
Graham is the only player of Edinburgh in this time range who scored 4 attempts in a single match and it came in a home victory against Agen in 2020 in the Challenge Cup. Here are the highlights of this and 4 very typical Darcy tries.

The scores of Boan Venter against Ospreys in January 2022 probably do not earn any highlights of highlights, but for the second score he walks in from about 12 yards who beat a few defenders on the road, but it is memorable for the fact that he was at the time, and I think he remains the only prophord in the history of the URC.
