Hasbro’s Nano-Mals are a virtual pet that rewards rewards

Since the original Tamagotchi landed in the shopping shelves 28 years ago, not much has changed in the world of virtual pets. The basic gameplay remains, where players are asked to feed, care and play with small digital beings in a handheld device. But new functions have also been added, such as Bluetooth connectivity and downloadable content (they are also a bit larger than before). This month, however, Hasbro throws his hat in the ring with the Nano-Mals, a $ 20 device that takes the standard functions of a virtual pet and aims to a new goal: fidget toys.

The first thing you will probably notice when you include one of the eight first nano-mals models is how cute they are all: they are styled after both common and unusual animals, including two cows, two cats, a red panda, a narwhal, and a few one-a and a half. But the second thing you notice is that there is no screen to find somewhere; Instead, the only “display” is an enlightened heart on the front of the toy that has three levels and changes color to indicate how saturated the toy is in terms of hunger, affection and play.

How you meet these needs is where the nanomales distinguish themselves from other virtual pets: instead of pressing buttons and navigating different menus, you communicate directly with the different parts of the toy instead. Push his ear to “stroke” it, turn his arms to “dance” and push his nose to “feed” it. The more you perform these actions, the more each color of the heart will fill, which ultimately results in a rainbow kaleidoscope over the toy’s chest.

It is incredibly easy to do, not only because these are simple actions, but because they are designed to be satisfactory because it is a fidget toys. It feels good to turn the arms up and down and squat the ears. Not so much to press the shallow nose button, which means that it was often the need that lasted the longest for me to fulfill. It was just not fun to push the nose! I can only hope that future iterations improve this.

Once you have discovered the basic functions, it becomes a game in itself to find the best way to hold the device and communicate. You don’t have to look at it and the whole thing can be operated with one hand, what exactly is what you want in a fidget toys. I noticed that I rotated it between my fingers while turning around the arms – the device also contains a gear meter, so every important movement also counts as ‘play’.

If you have more than one Nano-Mal-what probably the low price of the device has seen the toys communicate, light up and talk to each other. It is cute, but also a bit disturbing, because it is very reminiscent of this year’s Black Mirror episode “Playthings” with the nano-Mals who broadcast mysterious bleats and chats, just like the crowds. Fortunately there is an off-switch and the nanomales will happily barbel before they are switched off when you use it.

However, the off-switch is not absolutely because you press one of the buttons, the Nano-Mal will still respond, although perhaps not effectively as if the device is completely driven. This is a problem in view of the fact that the Nano-Mal is meant to switch off (there is even a clip at the top), but will probably be banned from classrooms because of the possibility that it is accidentally activated when a child moves their things. The toy can be filled in by keeping the nose underneath for a few seconds, but it only works when the device is completely switched on and Gesesets is always switched off when the Nano-Mal is switched off.

Apart from that and the fact that I could not remove the attachment clip, which stood in the way when I tried to turn the device in my hand, I think the Nano-Mal is a solid first attempt with this type of toy. Children will love how cute they are, especially if you dress them in the included clothing, which double the double of the devices. And adults will also appreciate them: parents are big on screen -free devices, while the young man will appreciate it to have something to keep their hands busy that their phone is not.

The Nano-Mals are now available at all major toy store, including Walmart And Amazon.
