KL Rahul was Bhogle’s first-choice opener. Rahul’s, who consolidated his opening position this year, scored 813 runs from 19 innings at an average of 45. Bhogle described him as the ideal Test opener who is calm, technically sound and reliable in challenging conditions. Teaming up with Rahul is Travis Head, an unconventional selection. Although Head was not a regular opener for most of the season, he delivered when given the role and played two match-winning innings in the ongoing Ashes.
At number three, the commentator placed India’s current Test skipper Shubman Gill. His experience as an opener earlier in his career and now as a No. 4 batsman convinced Bhogle that he would transition smoothly into the role. Gill finished the year with 983 runs and five centuries, making him eligible for Test Player of the Year. The middle order is anchored by two modern greats. Joe Root takes fourth spot, while Steve Smith bats at five.
Pat Cummins named captain
At the age of six, he bowled Ravindra Jadeja, mainly selected as a batting all-rounder. Although Jadeja did not have his best year with the ball, Bhogle noted his batting returns at an average of 63.7, and his value as a fifth bowler capable of influencing matches late on. Behind the stumps, Bhogle opted for Alex Carey, who he said simply couldn’t be dropped. Carey had an excellent year, scoring 743 runs at an average of 53, while also excelling with the gloves, especially against fast bowlers and spinners.
The bowling attack is led by Mitchell Starc, who was named Test Player of the Year by the veteran. Starc finished with 51 wickets at an average of 17, carrying Australia’s attack when others were unavailable. Pat Cummins plays the role of both bowler and captain. Despite playing only six Tests, Cummins took 26 wickets at 4.53pm, and Bhogle praised his leadership.
For the third seam he selected Mohammed Siraj. The Indian pacer’s tireless efforts and fighting spirit throughout the year earned him the nod ahead of Jasprit Bumrah, whose workload was carefully managed. The only specialist spinner in the XI, Simon Harmer, was picked for his excellence.
