Harry Redknapp has talked about Newcastle United.
The former Spurs and West Ham manager discusses Eddie Howe and his team now fourteen weeks into the new season.
Newcastle United plays against Man City this weekend.
Kick-off at 5.30pm on Saturday afternoon at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United emerge from this international breakthrough and should emulate their Champions League and Carabao Cup form in the Premier League.
Harry Redknapp talks to BetVictor ahead of Newcastle United playing at home to Manchester City:
“I can’t wait for this one, it should be amazing, it’s a bit of a clash of styles!
“Newcastle are having a strange season, they are doing so well in Europe but are struggling in the league.
“You don’t even want to catch up this early in the season.
“That win over Liverpool could be a big moment this season. I was just looking forward to it.” [Man] City looked back at their best in that first half, I was impressed and you saw the confidence back in the team.
“I can do it [see] Newcastle scares them, but [Man] City and Haaland will have too much.
“Prediction: Newcastle 1 Man City 2
One to watch: Doku was absolutely brilliant against Liverpool, the best I’ve ever seen him play.”
My thoughts
Same as Harry Redknapp, I can’t wait for this one! Another international break is finally coming to an end and I always feel that it is much better to return with a home game after so many key players have been away.
As Harry Redknapp notes, Man City beat Liverpool 3-0 at the Etihad before the internationals. Not a big surprise really, as Slot’s team have now lost seven of their last ten games in all competitions.
But like Newcastle United, Manchester City has also largely experienced a very different home and away form.
Pep’s side have won their last seven games at home in the Premier League and Champions League, but in their last six away games in those two competitions they have won just two, with a pair of draws and defeats at both Villa and Brighton. In their last four away games in the Premier League, Man City have scored just three goals and won just one of those four games.
No one needs to be reminded of Newcastle’s away form this season, especially in the Premier League. However, in all home competitions, Eddie Howe’s side have won all their last five games at St James’ Park, scoring 11 goals, conceding just one.
Manchester City have won just once in their last four visits to St James’ Park and that was in January 2024, when United came from a goal down to lead 2-1. At the time, Eddie Howe was still short on numbers in that injury-plagued season and with Sandro Tonali suspended. Pep Guardiola was able to bring in top-level substitutes, while Eddie Howe did not. Kevin de Bruyne scored a brilliant long-range effort with 16 minutes remaining before a world-class pass set up fellow substitute Oscar Bobb to score in extra time. A brutal result that Newcastle did not deserve.
Absent a comparable level of undeserved cruelty, I think Newcastle United are more than capable of at least getting a point at St James’ Park.
