Lewis Hamilton led Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc to the top of the FP2 classification at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after both McLaren drivers hit the wall on their flying laps.
Lando Norris was the first to hit the barriers when he suffered a step of upset in the right -handed turn that led to the base of the castle part of the track. His top -left band hit the barriers and led to a suspension failure that forced him to slowly crawl back to Pit Lane.
Required repairs were too extensive to complete in the last 25 minutes of the session, so that Norris only had seven laps for the hour and without a long -term simulation for the race.
Titeller Oscar Piastri was filthy in the same way in an attempt to sail a fast round together, with his first tour that he was wearing too much speed in turn 15. Both tires with the right side carried the impact.
A quick inspection in Pit Lane made him free to join the session again, but his follow -up Call was abandoned when he was stuck in turn 2, leaving him without a representative time.
That made the road clear for Ferrari to dominate the session, with Hamilton who shot to the top spot after a second flying round on used softs that set the benchmark to 1m41.293S. Leclerc shadowed him only 0.074s further back to complete the Ferrari practice one-two.
Mercedes teammates George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli only followed almost half a second further back. Russell could have been closer than 0.477s of the pace, with a second flying round that delivered him what a purple first sector was at the time, but a monster moment of upset that in turn 12 kaddered, forced him to leave the attempt.
Antonelli completed his first Friday without a crash since the mid -season break to get from his faster teammate within 0.009s.
Oliver Bearman was an impressive fifth for Haas with a great time in the last sector, which includes the flat part of turn 16 to the finish line. Despite complaining the braking problems late, the Bearman was 0.598 of the pace.
Max Verstappen was a quiet sixth and 0.609s slower than Hamilton, while Liam Lawson followed in the seventh and was only 0.087s on a drift in his racing bulls machine.
Esteban Ocon was eighth in the second Haas car at 0.874s Drift. Williams driver Alex Albon was another 0.01s back, but for the crashed Norris.
Carlos Sainz was 11th ahead of Piastri, who completed the session despite his two near-accident, including a long run on the soft band.
Isack Hadjar was 13th for Yuki Tsunoda, the Red Bull backed drivers separated by only 0.001s.
Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto was 15th for Pierre Gasly in the 16th.
Aston Martin van Lance Stroll took a big hit in turn 15 barriers, but the Canadian continued and completed the session in the 17th for Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso and Franco Colapinto, the Argentinian the only driver of more than 2s outside the pace.
