The two players are considered the best to ever play in the history of the sport, and few others can match their dominance over the past two decades.
But Haaland is scoring at such a pace that some think he should be in the conversation when it comes to the greatest footballers of all time.
Haaland debunks comparisons between Messi and Ronaldo
However, the Manchester City attacker disagrees. “No, not at all,” he said during Tuesday’s press conference before taking on former club Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.
“I’m far away. No one can get near the two of them, so no.”
City manager Pep Guardiola praised Haaland for the rare humility he shows for a footballer of his quality, which is why he named him one of the team captains.
“It’s hard to find a true world-class player who is incredibly humble and thinks what’s best for the team,” he said.
“It’s hard to find. When a player has this kind of skill and the talent, the generosity and kindness, whatever you want to say, and Erling is like that.”
“Normally a striker only thinks about goals, goals, goals. Of course he has to score goals, that’s clear. But he signed a ten-year contract and the more he is involved in many things, it will be better for him and the club.”
Asked if he had to work on staying humble, Haaland replied: “Not for me, it’s completely normal. I’m Norwegian and I shouldn’t think that I’m something because I score goals. I’m just Erling and this is something that will never change.”
