Gujarat is looking for a cable landing station on the coast and is currently in conversation with Reliance Industries LTD (RIL) and three other players for setting up this facility that will act as a gateway and connects submarine cables with data with the internet infrastructure on the land.
The government wants to set up one or more cable landing stations in the state. “We are planning to set up cable landing stations in the state. We have received proposals from four companies and we are currently investigating them” line.
Nowadays almost all digital international communication transit is through a network of submarine cables on the ocean floor. These cables have large amounts of data between countries and continents.
A cable landing station is a location in a country where these submarine cables arrive and connect to the internet infrastructure on the land.
“Two of these proposals are for setting up cable landing stations in the Saurashtra region, while two others are for the Zuid -Gujarat region. These facilities are set up by private entities,” said Khandhar, adding that the government was trying to complete the proposals. However, the IAS officer refused to share further details of the project with confidentiality.
In October 2022, Lightstorm had signed a memorandum of agreement (MOU) with the state government for building the first cable landing station and data centers of Gujarat. Details about the current status of the project – which suggested connecting Europe with Gujarat via submarine cables were not made public.
According to data from the government of India, there are 17 cable landing stations in India. These facilities are spread in Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Tuticorin and Thiruvananthapuram. Tata Communications, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Sify Technologies and BSNL are some of the companies involved in the submarine cable infrastructure activities in the country.
According to the Gujarat IT/ITES policy (2022-27), the government of Gujarat will offer incentives to such projects. This includes facilitating the arrangement of cable landing stations in the form of identification and allocation of suitable support for land and utility infrastructure at the door. The government will also offer one -off capital expenditure and electricity rate subsidy for a period of five years.
