Tonali has been in the news this week due to reports of interest from Arsenal on transfer deadline day. The reports stemmed from a leak from a third party, although both Arsenal and the player’s agent have denied any approach.
Guardiola sought out the midfielder at the whistle after City’s 3-1 win over Newcastle in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Manchester City and Manchester United have also been linked with Tonali, who is estimated to be worth around £100 million.
However, Guardiola has revealed how he knows the player’s father and has always been kept informed of Tonali’s happiness at St James’ Park.
“What did I say (to Sandro Tonali?) My Italian is perfect, so that’s why I can communicate with him,” Guardiola said.
“And we have a great friend from Brescia in common, Edoardo Piovani.
“And every time we are in touch, I know his father a while ago, and the whole time we met we talked about his experiences in Milan, the supporters, and how happy he is in Newcastle. He really is a top player, top, top, top player!”
