Guardiola responds to Dalot’s decision after Man Utd’s defeat

Pep Guardiola was reluctant to blame Man City’s defeat to Man Utd in the Manchester Derby on the lack of a red card for Diogo Dalot on Saturday.

Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu both scored in the second half at Old Trafford to give the Red Devils a deserved victory over their hated rivals.

But the hosts were lucky not to be a man down ten minutes into the match when Diogo Dalot caught Jeremy Doku on the shin with his studs. The full-back was shown a yellow card, which was confirmed by VAR as “the contact was deemed to be looking and not with excessive force”.

Asked whether Dalot should have been shown a red card, Guardiola told Sky Sports: “You could say that, you could say that red card, different game. A lot of situations happen.”

“It’s easy for me to come here and say it should be a red card. That’s not what it’s about. We won’t grow up if that’s the argument to win or lose a match. To do that you have to do better and we didn’t do that today.”

Guardiola surprisingly brought off Erling Haaland as part of a three-way substitution, with Bernardo Silva and Doku also coming on as City hunted for a goal late on. Asked if the decision was to save legs, he replied: “Some of it was. We had new energy. Ultimately it’s a matter of how many moments you have.”

City have now failed to win any of their last four Premier League matches, leaving them six points clear of league leaders Arsenal with an extra game played.

“It’s about how we grow up as a team,” the Catalan tactician added. “I feel like we have done very good things so far. To get better, you may have to take a step back. The season is still far away and you have to keep analyzing.”
