Foden came to prominence against Leeds this weekend with a brace in City’s 3-2 win at the Etihad. His second came in the 91st minute and decided the match in City’s favor after Leeds had drawn level from two goals down.
The 25-year-old has looked at his best in recent weeks and Guardiola has praised the midfielder. He praised Foden’s desire to keep improving and willingness to make things happen when the team is struggling.
“He has something incredible: you say ‘Phil, you have to play there’, in a position that might be against his potential, like playing on the right or playing wider on the left. ‘I want to play on the right or on the left, I want to help the team, I want to run,'” Guardiola said.
Guardiola says it is a pleasure to manage Phil Foden
“It’s an incredible pleasure to be his manager because he is always open to improving. And after he has the mentality and the composure to say: ‘I’m going to win the match’.”
“He never plays after the situation. Some players play at their best when everything is going well and smoothly, but there are players who take a step back when the situation is uncomfortable. Phil is the complete opposite, he says ‘give it to me’.” [the ball] And [let me] do it’.
“How many times have I seen Phil react when he’s in the final third, he’s alone in the penalty area, he doesn’t get the ball, he’s frustrated, ‘give me the ball because I want the ball and I want to score goals’.
“That’s the difference between the players here [down at this level] and one more step [up]. Phil has that. ‘Give me the ball, because I want to dribble, I want to score, I want to win the game’. He has had this ambition and mentality since he was a little boy. Happy with the two goals because he helped us, he was the man who could win the game.”
