The Grizzlies remain willing to listen to trade proposals involving Ja Morant, who is expected to be sidelined at least three weeks with a sprained elbow, reports Marc Stein in his latest column for The Stein Line.
That said, teams hoping Memphis will be motivated to sell low on the oft-injured point guard may have to adjust expectations.
Stein notes that there is internal pressure on the organization to secure a return greater than the team-friendly contracts the Hawks received when they moved Trae Young.
Stein further suggests that if Morant is still on the roster after the trade deadline, some tension could remain between the star guard and the Grizzlies’ head of basketball operations, Zach Kleiman.
According to Stein, Kleiman not only announced Morant’s availability in the league, but also publicly supported head coach Tuomas Iisalo during a reported disagreement between the two earlier this season.
Additionally, the team opted not to offer the player a contract extension last season despite him being eligible.
Morant has played in just 20 games this season and is averaging a career-high 28.5 minutes per game, though he has matched his career-best mark as a playmaker, dishing out 8.1 assists per game.
Despite Ja Morant’s injury, the Grizzlies are still looking for a trade partner for the point guard: https://t.co/dg6YGw1BLl
