Memphis Grizzlies General Manager Zach Kleiman clarified the team’s stance on Ja Morant, emphasizing that all decisions regarding the Star Guard reflect the organization’s strategy rather than personal issues. Morant remains with the franchise despite Memphis signing Jar Jackson Jr. in recent months. and Desmond Bane has traded in.
Kleiman acknowledged that Morant’s complicated trade value poses challenges. The GM emphasized that the organization maintains open communication with the player and his representatives regarding the future direction.
“We have been incredibly supportive of Ja for many years and this is about the direction of the organization, this is not about Ja in particular. I understand that Ja is Ja and more attention is being paid to that, but all of this is based on the direction of the organization and building a team that we believe can reach the highest levels of success in this league,” Kleiman said.
The Grizzlies are evaluating whether Morant fits into their new timeline focused on younger players. Kleiman indicated that the team has consistent standards for all roster members regarding their contributions and alignment with team goals.
“Ja, Ja remains a member of the team. We evaluate all of our players and we will continue to do so to see if they are taking consistent actions that lead to consistent positive results for the team. We will continue to work with Ja and everyone else on the team with an open mind as to whether the fit is there,” Kleiman said.
Memphis plans to continue discussions with Morant. The franchise’s inability to move the guard before the recent deadline means any resolution will wait until at least June.
“We have had and will continue to have constructive and honest conversations with Ja and Ja’s camp,” Kleiman said.
The Grizzlies acquired three first-round picks from Utah in the Jackson trade and a similar package from Orlando for Bane in June. These assets are the foundation of Memphis’ youth-focused rebuild.
