FAR-Flung Postcards is a weekly series in which the international correspondents of NPR Snapshots share moments of their lives and work around the world.

This summer the Seine River is open for swimming for the first time since the 1920s!

There are designated public swimming places and docks are built on various, such as these near the Eiffel Tower. Even on cloudy days, Parisians and tourists come to them.

You can sunbathe or swim against the luminous stream of the river in a cut area. All the while the ship and pleasure from boat traffic continues – which gives the experience a kind of surrealistic photos. When I came here last month, two lifeguards told me that there is much more to look at than in a normal pole.

For years, the mayors of the city promised to clean up the polluted river to swim. It finally happened with the Olympic Games last summer, where huge over -tanks were built to contain waste water during heavy rainfall.

Opening the river for swimmers could not have been at a better time, with Paris suffering from successive heat waves. So just like in impressionist paintings and old Sepia photos, Parisians can cool down again in their river.
