But the company responded promptly to its subscribers after announcing the closure, offering refunds where possible to soften the blow. Google went beyond just hardware and software refunds and even managed to open up its controller so it could be used on other platforms. As we enter the final stretch where users can unlock their Stadia controllers, it looks like a popular platform has now added support in the last moments.
Stages for Steam
The news comes from The edgereporting that the Stadia controller is now fully supported on Steam. While you could previously plug and use Google’s Stadia controller into the platform, it wasn’t a perfect fit and you had to remap the buttons to get it to work. However, that no longer seems to be the case as everything works seamlessly with the platform as soon as you connect.
When paired with Steam, most of the Stadia controller’s buttons are now mapped, so it works flawlessly with Valve’s operating system. As you can imagine, the standard controls and buttons work as is, but the Stadia button now allows users to go to the quick access menu, while the screenshot button now takes screenshots within the operating system. The Google Assistant key can now be programmed with a macro command.
Not a big deal, but nice to see
If you have a Stadia controller, it’s nice to see this kind of support coming to Steam. But we don’t think many people will be using a Stadia controller to play games in 2025. It’s been a few years since the platform closed and we think most people have started doing new things.
It’s an option if you already have one, but there are much better controllers out there. If you are someone who has a Stadia Controller and has yet to unlock it for use via Bluetooth, we recommend that you do so as soon as possible. Google has already extended the deadline for this, and we don’t think that will happen after this year.
