Google may offer Anthropic multi-billion dollar cloud deal for AI push

Anthropic PBC is in talks with Alphabet Inc.’s Google. about a deal that would provide the artificial intelligence company with additional computing power worth tens of billions of dollars, according to people familiar with the matter.

The plan, which has not yet been finalized, involves Google providing cloud computing services to Anthropic, said the people, who asked not to be named because the information is private. Google is a previous investor in and cloud provider for Anthropic.

Anthropic and Google declined to comment. Discussions are in the early stages and details are subject to change. Google shares rose more than 3.5% in extended trading, while Amazon.com Inc., also an anthropic investor and cloud provider, fell about 2%.

That financing, led by Iconiq Capital, with Fidelity Management and Research Co. and Lightspeed Venture Partners as co-leaders, nearly tripled Anthropic’s valuation to $183 billion, including dollars raised.

Google, Amazon are already major investors and cloud partners of Anthropic

Google previously invested about $3 billion in Anthropic; the tech giant pledged to invest $2 billion in the AI ​​startup by 2023, and followed up with another $1 billion early this year. Amazon has committed to investing approximately $8 billion in Anthropic, a major AI customer of Amazon Web Services, and a major user of Amazon’s custom AI chips.
