– A class action lawsuit over General Motors’ Hydra-Matic transmission has been filed in Canada following complaints about Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions.
According to the lawsuit, several GM models suffer from Hydra-Matic defects that lead to abrupt and/or delayed shifting.
The owner who filed the lawsuit against GM Canada complains that the problems are caused by “inadequate regulation and/or control, or undesirable fluctuations, of hydraulic fluid pressure” within the transmissions.

Drivers would have difficulty controlling the speed, accelerating and decelerating the vehicles, posing real safety risks to everyone on the road.
GM Hydra-Matic transmissions are automatic transmissions that include torque converters, planetary gear sets, the hydraulic systems (consisting of the oil pump and valve body), solenoids and the transmission control modules.
But if all these things don’t work together, the plaintiff complains that the transmission will suffer from “harsh or erratic shifting, delayed gear engagement, and gear skipping, causing the vehicle to vibrate, shudder, jerk, rattle, and hesitate between gears, all of which can lead to sudden and/or unexpected loss or increase in motive power.”
According to the GM Canada class action, the automaker is certainly aware of the transmission problems because GM began equipping vehicles with Generation 2 versions of the transmissions starting with the 2023 model year. In addition, twelve technical service bulletins have been issued to GM dealers.
These TSBs were issued due to customer complaints about the Hydra-Matic transmissions, specifically complaints about harsh or delayed transmission gear shifts. However, the class action alleges that GM Canada failed to make adequate repairs to the Hydra-Matic transmissions.
The class action lawsuit against GM Hydra-Matic transmission was filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia: Rupinder Dhillon v. General Motors, LLC, et al.
The plaintiff is represented by Dusevic & Garcha.
