Glenn Maxwell will not register for the IPL 2026 auction

A huge shock has hit the IPL world as Glenn Maxwell suddenly finds himself without a team despite being one of the league’s most explosive all-rounders in the world’s top T20 league. Punjab Kings (PBKS) decided to release Glenn Maxwell ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, raising serious doubts over whether he will even feature in the next season of the tournament.

Maxwell was one of five players shown the door by PBKS, along with Josh Inglis, Aaron Hardie, Kuldeep Sen and Pravin Dubey. But Maxwell’s release has caused a stir, mainly because of how poorly the Australian all-rounder’s last season went.

Following the deductions, Aakash Chopra has added fuel to the fire by suggesting that Maxwell might not find a buyer at all at the IPL 2026 auction. He even hinted that the all-rounder may not put his name on the auction list.

Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel, “They have said they will let Maxwell go. Maxwell cost ₹4.20 crore. Mitchell Owen had come in his place. Mitchell Owen was retained and Maxwell was let go. Is this the end of an era? Why am I saying it is an era? He has earned ₹101 crore from the IPL.”

The cricket expert said he wouldn’t be shocked if this could spell the end of Maxwell’s long IPL journey. Despite earning over ₹100 crore during his IPL career, the Australian all-rounder’s form has plummeted, and PBKS’s selection of Mitchell Owen over him has only fueled speculation that teams may no longer see him as a match-winning option.

The former Indian batsman further explained, “I have no grudge against anyone’s money. I want them to make ₹100 crore in one season. Players should get that kind of money because it is a multi-billion dollar league. It’s possible that someone could be interested, and it’s also possible that no one could be interested. He might mention his name, or he might not even mention his name. So that’s going to be an interesting one.”

Aakash Chopra was shocked when PBKS released Josh Inglis

Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra has expressed his shock over Punjab Kings’ surprise move to release Josh Inglis. However, the franchise made this decision after head coach Ricky Ponting confirmed that Inglis would miss the entire season.

With the PBKS side now only having a few gaps to fill, the commentator believes they will need a reliable middle-order batsman, and someone like Cooper Connolly could be an option. He also suggested that PBKS could look for a backup pacer and an Indian backup spinner.

With Xavier Bartlett, Lockie Ferguson and Marco Jansen already in the squad, Chopra felt that the core of the PBKS looks strong, and the franchise still has enough money to strengthen the remaining areas without any major changes for the upcoming IPL 2026.

Notably, the Punjab Kings will enter the IPL 2026 auction with ₹11.50 crore still in their pockets. With 21 players already in the squad, the PBKS can only add four more, and of those, only two can be foreign players, so they will be aiming for a few impactful signings.
