GitHub will do that start charging $0.002 per minute for self-hosted Actions runners used on private repositories from March. At the same time, GitHub noted on Tuesday blog post that it will lower the prices of GitHub-hosted runners starting January 1, under an arrangement it calls “simpler pricing and a better experience for GitHub Actions,” reports The Register. “Using self-hosted runners on public repositories remains free.” Regardless of the public repository distinction, enterprise-level developers who rely on self-hosted runners were predictably unhappy with the announcement. “Github just sent out an email announcing a $0.002/minute fee for self-hosted runners,” Reddit user markmcw posted on the DevOps subreddit. “I just ran the numbers, and for us that’s almost $3.5k extra per month on our GitHub bill.” […]
“Historically, self-hosted runner customers have been able to use much of GitHub Actions’ infrastructure and services at no cost,” the repo host said in its blog FAQ. “This meant that the costs of maintaining and developing these essential services were largely subsidized by the prices set for GitHub-hosted runners.” The move, GitHub said, will more closely align costs with usage. Like many similar changes to pricing models pushed by tech companies, GitHub says that “the vast majority of users … will not see a price increase.”
GitHub claims that 96 percent of its customers will see no change in their bill, and that 85 percent of the 4 percent affected by the price update will actually see their Action costs drop. The company says the remaining 15 percent of affected users will see an average increase of about $13 per month. For those using self-hosted runners and concerned about higher costs, GitHub has updated price calculator to include the costs of self-hosted runners.
