A family camping trip turned into a panic when the four -year -old Madeline Tuckwiller became paralyzed after a gigantic tick had embedded in her scalp.

Taylor Justice and her family went on a two -day camping trip earlier this month to celebrate Mother’s Day.

The 31-year-old, however, remained ‘terrified’ when her ‘perfectly healthy’ daughter woke up five days later, unable to walk.

Justice, a salon owner of White Sulthur Springs, West Virginia, said: “It was frightening. My perfectly healthy four -year -old who was unable to scare me. I had no idea [what was wrong with her].

‘So we went camping on Mother’s Day weekend [the tick] Had been there for a few days.

‘As soon as she woke up, she couldn’t walk and crawl on the floor. Think of someone who is intoxicated by alcohol. That’s why we took her to the hospital. ‘

After they brought her to the Emergency Department, doctors found a dime-sized tick held on the head of Madeline, which caused drawing parliament, a rare and life-threatening state caused by a neurotoxin released by certain sign.

Justice added: ‘The paralysis struck her whole body and she couldn’t make an eye contact with anyone. It caused complete paralysis of the soil and it worked his way to her hands and her head and she was not even able to sit up. ‘

Tick paralysis is rare and there is no formal monitoring of the condition, so it is unknown how many cases occur per year. It is documented worldwide and is often seen in children and adult men.

It is also documented in animals.

The paralysis is caused by a neurotoxin from the saliva and the condition is associated with 40 different types. In North America, most cases are associated with the American Dog Tick and the Rocky Mountain Wood Tick.

If the situation is caught early and the tick is removed, paralysis is reversed and a complete recovery is expected, usually within 24 hours.

If not diagnosed and left behind to get ahead, this can lead to respiratory failure and death.

Symptoms include weakness, paralysis starting in the legs and rising, loss of coordination, breathing difficulties and paralysis of the respiratory muscles.

They usually occur two to seven days after a tick bite.

After they had been taken to the hospital, doctors carried out tests and did a CT scan on Madeline that did not reveal significant findings.

Doctors then referred her to a more advanced children’s hospital at a three -hour drive where a neurologist performed tests on her to check the reflexes of the toddler.

Justice said: ‘The next morning [the neurosurgeon] Came in and he noticed that she couldn’t use her hands. We tried to play [a game] And she could not pick up the cover to put them in.

“He said,” Something isn’t right “and suddenly he just asked” are you a lot outside? ” We live outside and our family is going to camp.

“As soon as he asked, he checked her head. Two seconds later he said he had found the diagnosis and it was the tap.

The neurologist discovered a female rocky mountain wood on her head.

Justice continued: ‘I felt sick and I wanted it to be removed immediately. It was in her blood. Only women produce that neurotoxin in their saliva and when they bite their saliva produces a narcotic agent, so Madeline would not feel it.

“They were worried that it could cause Lyme disease because it could cause long -term effects on children and adults.”

Lyme disease is another disease transmitted by ticks, but it is not caused by a neurotoxin as with drawing parlor. Lyme is a bacterial infection that causes flu -like symptoms and it is not reversible by simply removing the ticks – doctors must prescribe antibiotics.

As soon as her doctors realized the cause of her paralysis, they removed the tick from her head.

Madeline was able to walk again four hours after the tick and she got a dose of doxycycline – an antibiotic – to reduce the risk of Lyme disease.

After the test, Justice said that she will now be ‘so vigilant’ about wearing ticket display and checking Madeline at ticks and urges other parents to do the same thing.

She said: ‘I never thought a tick bite would lead to all this. I’ve never seen anything like that. She still wakes up in the morning and her legs are a bit stiff, but as soon as she starts walking all day, it is normal again.

‘Check your children [for tick bites] And be determined about checking their heads, behind their ears and even their waist. There is a possibility that can happen. ‘
