Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed indignation about a website for adults who published unauthorized photos of women, including themselves, amid a national protest on online misogynia and abuse.
Administrators of the website whose name is a play on a vulgar Italian jargon for female sexual organs, took it on Thursday, local time, after widespread conviction and legal complaints.
“I am disgusted by what happened, and I want to express my solidarity and proximity with all the women who are insulted, insulted and violated in their intimacy by the managers of this forum and the ‘users’,” Mrs. Meloni told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The website has been active since 2005 and had more than 200,000 registered members, but this week came under intense media and political research after another highly published case of online abuse of women’s gentlemen.
Earlier this month, Facebook brought down the My Wife group, where users shared intimate photos of women without their permission, after a wave of public complaints initiated by author and activist Carolina Capria.
The group had more than 32,000 members.
When announcing the closure of the Facebook, a spokesperson for Facebook’s parent company said, said that the group violated the policy of the social media company against the sexual exploitation of adults.
“It is discouraging to see that in 2025 there are still people who think it is normal and legitimate to trample the dignity of a woman and to make her the object of sexist and vulgar insults, hidden behind anonymity or a keyboard,” said Mrs. Meloni.
Alessandra Moretti has filed a criminal complaint against the website.
The 48-year-old, who has been in office since 2022, is the first female prime minister of Italy.
The incident of calls from proponents of women’s rights and legislators, said Eugenia Roccella Minister of Equality that the government was working on stronger online protection and cultural reforms to combat misogyny and sexism.
The site for adults organized thousands of manipulated images and videos of female public figures, often accompanied by obscene and violent comments.
It also contained photos of ordinary women, classified by geographical location.
The managers said in a message that they closed the forum “with great regret” because of “toxic behavior” that “had damaged the original spirit”.
In addition to Mrs. Meloni, the images of opposition leader Elly Schlein, Influencer Chiara Ferragni and EU legislator published Alessandra Moretti, who submitted a criminal complaint and said that such websites “encourage rape and violence”.
