Gilbert Arenas was arrested on Wednesday after the Ministry of Justice had filed charges against the former NBA star for running an illegal poker competition with high-stakes in Los Angeles. Arenas, together with five others, were charged with operating an illegal gambling company, where the group contains an alleged member of an Israelically organized crime syndicate.
Information about the indictments of the DOJ state that Arenas and the five charged organized the game from a Mansion of Encino, California, owned by Arenas. Here players with a high bet would use for considerable sums of money, where the organization of each hand is a cut or “rake”.
It is here that the game becomes illegal. Private poker games are not explicitly illegal in the United States, but it is against the law for the house to take a reduction in a procedure. It is claimed that in addition to the Gershman gambling ring, a “sham marriage” has also introduced a citizen from the United States to obtain legal residence in exchange for money, and lying on his immigration paper when he was asked if he had been held before a crime and whether he was planning to gamble illegally or another commercial vice.
All were arrested on Wednesday by LAPD officers without incidents. Arenas is confronted with a maximum of five years in prison for the crimes.
