Ed GiacominA Hockey Hall of Fame goalkeeper who played most of his NHL career for the New York Rangers died on Monday at the age of 86.

Giacomin withdrew from the NHL after the 1977-78 season with 290 victories and 54 shutouts in 610 games in the regular season. He entered the Hall of Fame with the 1987 class, and the Rangers retired his number 1 on March 15, 1989.
“The National Hockey League mourns the death of a real original, Hockey Hall of Famer and beloved New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings -goalkeeper Eddie Giacomin,” the NHL said in a statement. “One of the first Stickhandling -goalkeepers, Giacomin, the rise in the Rangers in the early 1970s with the NHL’s Upper Echelon aware of the NHL’s Upper Echelon and reached four straight semi -finals and the Stanley Cup final in 1972.
“A six-fold NHL All-Star who also led the competition in matches that played four consecutive seasons, Giacomin heard routinely hymns of ‘Ed-Die! Ed-Die!’ From worshiping Madison Square Garden Crowds and retired his number 1 through the franchise in 1989. Giacomin played for Clinton, Washington and New York of the Eastern Amateur Hockey League (EHL) and Montreal of the Eastern Professional Hockey League, followed by five seasons with Providence of the American Hockey League of 1960-65. Providence exchanged him to the Rangers on May 18, 1965 and he went 8-20 with six tires for last place New York and was relegated to Baltimore of the AHL for seven games.

Giacomin and the Rangers went on to the Stanley Cup final of 1972, a loss of six games for the Boston Bruins. The Rangers placed Giacomin on exemptions and he was claimed on 31 October 1975 by the Detroit Red Wings.
Two nights later, Giacomin returned to Madison Square Garden for the first time as a visiting player. The Red Wings beat the Rangers 6-4 with fans who sing “Eddie, Eddie” during the game. He played three seasons with Detroit before he retired on January 17, 1978 and finished 290-209 with 96 tires, a 2.82 goals against average, .902 savings percentage and 54 shutouts.
