Gerrard gives his opinion on the standoff between Salah and Liverpool

Steven Gerrard has given his opinion on Mohamed Salah’s current impasse with Liverpool.

Salah was this week left out of Liverpool’s squad for the clash with Inter Milan after controversial comments in the aftermath of this weekend’s draw in Leeds.

The Egyptian, an unused substitute at Elland Road, said after the match that he now had ‘no relationship’ with Arne Slot and accused Liverpool of throwing him under the bus in poor results. Salah has started each of the club’s last three league matches on the bench.

Salah appears to be heading for a move away from Liverpool ahead of the January transfer window. However, former Liverpool captain Gerrard believes a farewell is not a certainty and called on all parties to accept their culpability in the situation.

“He is obviously very angry that he is not playing, which I respect,” Gerrard told TNT Sports.

“He will not exclude the team, I respect that. A few lines about throwing people under the bus, wrong. We have to distance ourselves from that a little bit, he has to deal with that with the manager.”

“This requires Virgil van Dijk to ask: ‘How are we going to solve this?’ Not even for the benefit of the club, or the team, it’s the fans.

“I’ve seen it and I’ve been there. I’ve been there with (Luis) Suarez when he got into a fight with Brendan (Rodgers) face to face. I’ve seen it there and I’ve been there myself from a personal perspective.”

“I made the Salah statements and sent off in 30 seconds against Manchester United. So no one is perfect. We’ve all had losses as players. We’ve all done emotional things and I know that over time, when this all calms down, Mo will say: ‘I shouldn’t have said that. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that and I was a bit emotional, and I was a bit rushed’.”

“But at the end of the day, Liverpool Football Club needs Mo Salah to play well and score goals. Because he is the best player, the best scorer, and he will help them get out of this. If this continues, this will be bigger than what we all know and what we all see.”
