Genting Highlands road charge needed to cover high maintenance costs, says Tourism Minister Tiong – paultan.org

Genting Group’s plan to impose fees on vehicles entering Jalan Genting Highlands is necessary for road maintenance, which is costly, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Tiong King Sing.

“As far as we know, it is a private road. All maintenance is done by Genting Group. For sustainability reasons, they have no choice but to do this,” said Tiong, as reported by FMT. The minister was responding to a question from reporters at a recent event on how the proposed road charge could affect tourism in the area.

Tiong noted that increased development in the area, much of which is outside the control of the Genting Group, made the road charge necessary. “There are really too many people coming in to use the road, and there are too many heavy vehicles. So the costs are going to be high. I understand where they’re coming from,” he said.

However, he stressed that Genting Group must ensure that costs are fair and transparent, rather than operating as a profit-driven entity. “If there are people who visit places like the casino, I think the toll should not be a burden for them,” he said, adding that workers, motorcyclists and business partners should be exempted from paying the road tax.
