The house of Gene Hackman was in disorder when he died, covered with loose items and food while he was infected with rats, creating a breeding ground for the deadly virus that his wife killed.

Authorities also found dead rats, rat droppings and nests in the eight buildings that form their estate, making their house a potential breeding ground for Hantavirus.

Hantavirus can only be spread to people by animals, not from person to person. Victims catch the virus of contact with rats urine, droppings and saliva. The virus is rare, with only 864 cases reported in the US from 1993 to 2022, according to the Centers for disease control and prevention.

Arakawa spent her last days searching for internet for information about flu-like symptoms that can cause handavirus and breathing techniques.

Researcher’s review of her computer showed that Arakawa was looking for medical disorders with regard to COVID-19 and the flu between 8 February and the morning of 12 February, including whether COVID-19 could cause dizziness or nose bleeding.

Arakawa then searched for a medical service for concierge on 12 February. She called a local service and spoke 2 minutes on the phone. She missed a return later that afternoon.

Arakawa was last seen on 11 February. Hackman is supposed to have died a week later.

A few maintenance workers found the bodies only 26 February and called the police. The couple told the officers that they had not seen the homeowners in about two weeks. Despite the fame of the pair, they chose to throw away the bright lights of Hollywood, instead lived in the messy house in New Mexico.

The deaths were not initially suspected that they brought false play, but were then determined ‘suspicious’ and the investigations continued.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza later told the media that there were no signs of a fight and that the couple had no external trauma.

“There was no indication of something that was missing in the house or disturbed that there would be an indication that there was a crime that had occurred,” said Mendoza.

Testing and observation of the systems of the house of the Santa Fire Department and New Mexico Gas Company have not revealed immediate signs of a leak. Both have tested negatively for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Medical examiners then said that the pair died of natural causes, where Arakawa died of Hantavirus and Hackman that suffer countless health problems.
