Sanju Samson’s international career has often been a stop-start affair, in which the talented Wicketkeeper-Batter is struggling to strengthen its place in the White-Ball-Squadrons in India, despite its clear potential.
Things changed after Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach and Suryakumar Yadav was called the T20i captain. The new leadership gave Samson the opportunity to open the batting next to Absishek Sharma.
The move did not pay immediately, with Samson going through a meager patch against Sri Lanka. However, he bounced back strongly against Bangladesh and South Africa and quickly struck three T20i lions in succession.
Samson spoke on the YouTube channel of Ravichandran Ashwin, revealed how a candid conversation with Gambhir lifted his mind after the Sri Lanka series.
“I was a bit down in the dressing room and Gautam Bhai came to me and asked what happened. I told him:” After a long time I got the chance, but I didn’t succeed. ” He said, “So what I will not drop, even if you register 21 ducks.”
Samson also reminded himself of the support of Suryakumar Yadav for the series.
‘Surya told me:’ We have set seven games and I will give you all seven more open. “Hearing from the captain himself felt great,” said Samson.
The Kerala cricket player has credited both Gambhir and Yadav for teaching faith in him.
“That kind of confidence of the captain and coach really helped me to go outside and perform,” he said.
So far Samson has played 42 T20Is for India and scored 861 runs with an average of 25.32 and a success rate of 152.38, including three centuries and two fifties.
