Gauff beats stubborn Lys to reach China Semis

Defending champion Coco Gauff reached the semi-final of the China for the third consecutive year after beating hard-hitting Eva Lys 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday.

The second placed American suffered from her serve and admitted seven breaking point opportunities, but Lys, a German player who was looking for her first career-WTA title, could only turn three and drop her own serve five times against the French open champion.

“She is a tough opponent. She has taken a number of incredible photos,” said Gauff, who is looking for her 11th career title. “I did my best to stay aggressive. Just stay confident in my game and not being too passive.”

The semi-final of Gauff will be the third placed Amanda Anisimova his-De Wimbledon and US Open Runner-Up Die Return from a set to beat Jasmine Paolini 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 in a 2-hour match, 49 minutes.

The victory ensured that Anisimova will play next month at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi -Arabia, for the first time.

In the decisive set, Anisimova was in trouble on 4-3, 40-15 lower than a crucial handle. She served the match against Paolini, who recently helped Italy to keep the Billie Jean King Cup.

It was only their second meeting, four years after Anisimova defeated Paolini in straight sets on clay in Palermo, Italy.
