Beijing title defender Coco Gauff reached the semi-final of the China for the third consecutive year after beating the hard-hitting Eva Lys 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday.
The second placed American suffered from her serve and admitted seven breaking point opportunities in Beijing. But Lys, a German player who was looking for her first career -wta title, could only turn three and drop her own serve five times against the French open champion.
“She is a tough opponent, she fled some incredible shots,” said Gauff, who is looking for her 11th career title. “I did my best to stay aggressive. Just stay confident in my game and not being too passive.”
Gauff is then confronted with fellow American and third seed Amanda Anisimova, the Wimbledon and US Open Runner-Up. She gathered to beat the sixth placed Jasmine Paolini 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 in a tight competition that lasts almost three hours.
Paolini ran 3-0 ahead and dominated the tiebreaker.
Anisimova stormed back to go 4-1 in the second set and achieved it on Serve.
In the decisive set, Anisimova was in trouble on 4-3, 40-15 lower than a crucial handle. She served the match against Paolini, who recently helped Italy to keep the Billie Jean King Cup.
It was only their second meeting, four years after Anisimova defeated Paolini in straight sets on clay in Palermo, Italy.
