Manchester United achieved a much-needed 2-0 win against Sunderland in Old Trafford during the weekend.
Brief
The victory took Ruben Amorim’s side in the upper half of the table and they are now three points in fifth place.
Speaking for the match against the Black Cats, Amorim claimed that some of his players listened to the criticism of experts rather than to his own instruction.
When defending his 3-4-3 system in the press conference before the game, he stated that: “My players, I guarantee you, they listen to all opinions and they put it in because we don’t win games. They have to believe in me. So my biggest problem is that my players believe in you when you say that the problem of our team is the system.”
Gary Neville -Criticism
The former United Defender was hardly sympathetic to Amorim after the victory over Sunderland and criticized the comments while speaking Sky Sports.
Neville responded to the words of Amorim by claiming: “If experts get into your head, you shouldn’t play for the club.”
The former international in England remembered his own experiences as a young player who broke through: “People remember that Alan Hanson did not criticize us when we were broken into like young children who said you couldn’t win anything with children. That was the biggest center back of all time at the time when we were talking about us, inferior and nowhere.”
Neville also stated that the shortcomings of the players are very much on them and that they must have shoulders wide enough to cope with the criticism.
He continued: “They didn’t think we were criticized during our football career. I am sorry you play for Manchester United – it comes with the territory, you have to perform.”
Neville explained: “They have been hopelessly in the system. If it is not the system, then the players are a problem, the manager is a problem, it is a problem if you lose football matches to the level they have done.”
The former defender also claimed that there seemed to be a lack of accountability in the United dressing room compared to his days as a player. He claimed that players apologized against each other after a defeat and he is not sure if that is happening on the current side.
He concluded: “I think they should just concentrate on doing their work and doing well and winning football matches. The only thing that someone is going to close is to win football matches and they have not won anything close enough.”
