The Reds will be looking for a third successive Premier League win when they host Nuno Espirito Santo’s team this weekend. A win would take the champions level on points with fourth-placed Manchester United.

A home game against a side in the relegation zone makes LFC the clear favorites on paper, but the Irons come to Merseyside with an improved form that has seen them take 11 points from the last 18 available in the top flight.

Martinez backs West Ham to win at Anfield

Martinez was a guest on the latest episode of Stick to footballand he explained why he thinks West Ham could cause an upset against Liverpool, despite the teams’ respective positions in the league.

The former Everton manager said: “What I think is that the West Ham manager knows how to win at Anfield, and Liverpool struggles against teams that are very defensive. I would like to see West Ham win 1-0. I don’t think there will be many goals.”

A cheerful Neville then chimed in: “Wow! I could enjoy that all day. I’m happy with that.”

Is there a case for West Ham on Saturday?

Martinez will raise quite a few eyebrows by predicting that West Ham will win on Saturday, but is there logic in his declaration for an away win?

Nuno has upset Slots before, having won at Anfield and drawn Liverpool at the City Ground last season as manager of Nottingham Forest. The Reds boss has often complained about coming up against the kind of low block he can expect this weekend.

The Irons also make the trip to Merseyside with a resurgent form that has significantly improved their chances of avoiding relegation, and they can move into L4 with a ‘free hit’ of sorts as the burden of expectation will rest on the shoulders of the champions to take all three points.

However, the recent history of this match – and Nuno’s overall record against LFC – would clearly point to a home win.

West Ham have a terrible record at Anfield (and so does Nuno)

West Ham have been defeated in each of their last 10 visits to Anfield since a 2-2 draw in December 2016 and have managed just four away wins over Liverpool from 75 attempts.lfchistory.net), so historically this was a rather sobering event for East Londoners.

Even though Nuno achieved two results against Slot last season, he lost eight of his 11 previous outings against the Redsincluding all three in L4 until Forest came to do a song on us about a year and a half ago.

Two of the current bottom four in the Premier League have taken points from LFC at Anfield this season, so we can’t say we haven’t been forewarned of the potential banana peel the Irons could deliver.

However, Liverpool should have the necessary quality to pass a difficult test with a win, especially if Florian Wirtz is cleared to play after missing our win at Forest last weekend.
