NB: We’re currently preparing articles for the Christmas and New Year holidays, so if you’ve been thinking about writing a Reader’s Feature, now is the perfect time to submit it. It can be on any topic you want, as long as it is at least 500 words long.
Forgot your birthday
There’s been a lot of talk about how weird it is that Nintendo isn’t announcing a new Super Mario game before the movie next year, but I haven’t heard anyone mention that next year is Zelda’s 40th anniversary. Not just next year, but February 21st! And yet, as far as I know, they haven’t announced anything yet.
I know Nintendo has ignored big birthdays before (they also ignored Donkey Kong and Mario turning 40, but that was during Covid), but surely they’re not going to let 40 years of Zelda pass without a celebration/sales opportunity?
I didn’t know it was that fast until I looked it up, but what does anyone think they’ll do? There has been some talk about spin-offs lately, but there doesn’t seem to be time to announce anything in time for February. Although they could announce it in February for later in the year. A remake of the very first game? I would suspect so, but who knows. I just hope it’s something good and not a cheap cash grab.

Quiet ending
I completely agree with this weekend’s Reader’s Feature about consoles dying, especially the part about no one doing anything about it. Sony is asleep at the wheel, Xbox can’t do anything and even Nintendo doesn’t seem to want it anymore.
I don’t know how much of this is due to rising hardware prices, but it just feels like they know the gig is over and are trying to trick as many people as possible before the whole thing becomes economically impossible.
Sony in particular is disgusted by how little leadership we’ve seen from them in recent years. I don’t even know who’s in charge of them anymore and I don’t think they’ve said anything publicly since Jim Ryan left. It feels like console gaming is going out with a whimper, not a bang.

Lack of love
Now that Metroid Prime 4 is out and not exactly the most popular ever, I wonder: not what will happen to Metroid as a franchise, but what will happen to developer Retro Studios? The only things they’ve made in recent years are Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country. But after Bananza I can’t imagine them making another Country game.
So what happens to them? Do they immediately start making Metroid Prime 5 even though no one likes it, or do they make something completely new? I would prefer that, but I’m also aware that if this wasn’t Nintendo, they would probably be shut down over this failure. I don’t think Nintendo would do that, but it’s not like they’re a charity either, so it’s not impossible. I hope the next game is more loved.

Berenstain bears
Just finished the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. While I wouldn’t say it was terrible, it certainly felt very hygienic. It makes me not want a remaster for any of the other games.
It felt like the non-player characters were dumber, if that was possible. The zombies have laser-aimed grabbers. If you drink too much alcohol, you won’t be able to vomit. I’m pretty sure they took the nerve out of the guy’s punching motion.

I am now also aware that I have the Mandela effect with this game. For an entire playthrough I wondered when I would get combo weapons. Turns out I combined this game and the second, and best, game with the original. When I say second, of course I mean the Off The Record version with Frank and not the second with Chuck.

Fairly complicated
I hope the Zelda boss was just being polite, because I honestly can’t imagine anything you’d want to take from Hyrule Warriors to inspire the next main game, and I don’t even hate Hyrule Warriors that much. But what would you take? He can only talk about more complex fights, right?
That’s a good idea in theory, but if Zelda were to get a combat overhaul, I’d want it to be a little closer to Devil May Cry than Hyrule Warriors. You wouldn’t have it as complicated as anything Capcom would do, but a little more complexity wouldn’t hurt. But to be honest, I’d rather leave it as it is if it means I don’t get to pick up bad habits from an inferior franchise.

Apples vs. oranges
So I bought Silent Hill 2 because it was 50% off at Xbox launch. And my honest thoughts: don’t really get the hype. The weapons list is extremely simple: pistol, shotgun, rifle – nothing original there.
Most areas are extremely dark and I’m not sure why, as it adds little to the gameplay aside from using the flashlight, which serves no other purpose. The maze-like corridors are built in such a way that they are frustrating and boring, as walking through them is a chore. The worst example is shortly after Toluca Prison, where you seem to descend into the core of the Earth, only to get lost.
The play pattern is find key, solve puzzle, find object, unlock door, find key, solve puzzle, etc., etc. as you whack the same enemies over and over again in a repetitive manner. It’s not a bad game, but many other games with these gameplay mechanics would be criticized. I think Bloober did a good job, even if some of the game areas feel padded.
But I think the gameplay is a sign of the times in which this game was released. I was also eagerly awaiting this, thinking it would be an improvement over Silent Hill f. But actually I think I prefer Silent Hill because at least I think I prefer the main character Hinako in it, rather than James who has no personality whatsoever.
This game makes me anticipate Resident Evil Requiem even more acutely, as I think it might knock Silent Hill 2 out of the park.

GC: That might be the most uncharitable description of a video game we’ve ever heard. Why are you complaining about the lack of weapons when Silent Hill f has none at all?
Don’t miss an issue
I’m really sorry to bother you, I was subscribed to the GameCentral newsletter but I haven’t received one since December 6th.
I re-registered but missed December 13th and 20th. If they ship on Saturday, I would really appreciate it if you could send me the ones I missed, please.
Arron
GC: As far as we know, these were all shipped normally. Have you checked your spam folder? We will try to forward them to you later.

RE: Gyros. Super Metroid was the same in terms of not being able to go back once you get to the final area.
Once you got into Tourian (the last 15 minutes of the game), that was it, the door was closed and therefore you couldn’t go back and aim for a 100% collected item rate.
I always enjoyed rescuing the animals (or aliens?) in the absolutely fantastic escape section, after beating the final boss though. That was something I didn’t know you could do until I read about it online a few years ago.
I know it’s been repeated many times before, but it really was/is a very special game and looking back on it, I was so glad in retrospect that my parents refused to pay the ridiculous £65 for Mortal Kombat 2 from Woolworths at Christmas 1994, so I had to make do with Super Metroid for £40. Good times.
Adams6legend
GC: That’s a good price for Super Metroid in 1994.

Thanks for the Sektori review. I had never heard of it before then. As a long-time twin-stick shooter enthusiast, I had to buy it, bargain price and all. It’s right up my alley, I love Robotron: 2084, Smash TV, Resogun. and Nex Machina. No matter how difficult?
Coin lock
GC: It’s not easy, no. But we’re glad you enjoyed it.
So how long will it take for games like Fortnite and Minecraft to appear on Nex Playground? I bet it won’t be long and then we suddenly have a new console maker on our hands that is going to undercut Nintendo for the family market.
Crank
GC: We’re not sure if this would work unless they release a controller for it.
