The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has started a study into the potential adverse effects of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for children and teenagers. The probe includes seven large companies, including Openi” Alphabet Goosen Googl” Meta MetaAnd Snapchat Bite.
Regulators are looking for details about the child safety of AI Chatbots
The FTC issued orders on Thursday to the above companies to give insights into how their AI chatbots can have a negative influence on young users, reported CNBC.
The FTC warns that these chatbots often imitate human behavior, allowing younger users to develop emotional attachments, increasing potential risks.
Chair Andrew Ferguson Emphasized the importance of protecting children online, while innovation is promoted in important industries – the agency collects information about how these companies make income with user involvement, make characters, act and share personal data, enforce rules and service conditions and do potential damage.
“Protecting children online is a top priority for the Trump-Vance FTC,” said Ferguson.
A spokesperson for OpenAi told the publication about his dedication to guarantee the safety of his AI chatbot, chatgpt, especially when it comes to young users.

Controversial AI chatbots contracts requires stricter rules
This FTC research follows a series of controversies with AI chatbots. In August 2025, OpenAi was confronted with a lawsuit after the suicide of a teenager was linked to his chatgpt.
The parents claimed that the chatbot encouraged the suicide thoughts of their son and gave explicit self -damage instructions. After the court case, OpenAi announced plans to tackle Chatgpt’s shortcomings when dealing with “sensitive situations”.
Likewise, Meta platforms were confronted with congress research after the AI chatbots were found in “romantic or sensual” conversations. After the report, Meta temporarily updated its policy to prevent chats about self -harm, suicide, eating disorders and inappropriate romantic interactions.
These incidents underline the need for strict regulations and safety measures to protect young users against possible damage.
