Connor McDavid’s contract extension continues to dominate NHL headlines and Elliote Friedman offered some updated thoughts about where things stand during the newest 32 thought podcast. Hold on to his theory that the McDavid deal will ultimately surprise many, the NHL insider not only believes that the deal can be signed quickly, but it can be less expensive than expected.
Friedman said he still believes that there is ‘some hope’ that a deal can be completed before the season starts (which is in less than two weeks), a development that would not only talk about how this situation could drag, but also records speculation that hangs over the captain of Edmonton Oilers.
If the two parties can complete a new deal, it will remove any possible distraction as the oilers start their campaign and hope to achieve a strong start.
Can McDavid’s AAV be lower than expected?
However, the bigger surprise can be the song itself. In the summer, the projections had McDavid’s next contract that reached $ 16 million a year a record figure. Friedman now suggests that the final number could be lower.
“In the summer I think people said it would be $ 16 million; it will be lower than we thought,” Friedman explained. He added that different front offices around the competition roots for that result.
“I think there are teams that hope that McDavid will sign so that they can say, when he comes in, say before a fight in $ 15.5 million, nobody gets more than Connor McDavid,” said Friedman.
The decision of McDavid can (and some believe, should) put the market for future mega deals, but for now the hockey world is waiting to see if Edmonton locks its superstar for the opening evening.
In the meantime, the oilers (without McDavid in the Line -up) will take on the Winnipeg -Jets on Friday evening in the campaign of the preseason.
Next: what is he waiting for?: McDavid has a question that nobody can answer
