PIN the Greek Meatballs to try later!

This Fried Greek Meatballs with Feta are a favorite recipe that I have made many times over the years! And if you look around my blog, it’s clear that I’m a big fan of Greek food. I don’t know if this type of meatball is authentically Greek, but it is certainly packed with Greek flavors.

And these meatballs are an easy dish, so you don’t have to think about a diet. You can serve the meatballs as a main course, but they also quickly disappear on a party buffet table.

I would like to point out that because the meatballs do not contain bread crumbs or oatmeal, some liquid will seep out of the meat during cooking. Just expect this to happen, and you can even scoop the liquid a few times if necessary. And if you are patient and just keep cooking the meatballs even though the pan may look like a mess, the finished Greek meatballs will be so delicious!

What gives the meatballs a Greek flavor?

I love all the ingredients used here, like feta cheese, oregano, garlic, onion, and red wine vinegar, and those ingredients really give these meatballs a great Greek flavor.

Can the Greek Meatballs be frozen?

These meatballs can certainly be frozen. They will keep in the freezer for a few months in a well-sealed container and can easily be reheated in the microwave or in a pan on the stove. If you can, I would thaw them first before reheating them.

How low in carbohydrates are the Greek Meatballs with Feta?

The meatballs contain only 1 net carb per meatball, with 8 grams of protein!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef

  • 1/2 small onion, chopped

  • 1/2 cup very finely crumbled feta cheese (measure after it is finely crumbled with a fork)

  • 2 tsp. chopped garlic

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil

  • 4 tsp. red wine vinegar

  • 1 T dried Greek oregano

  • 1 teaspoon. Greek seasoning (optional, but good)

  • 1/4 tsp. salt (optional, see notes)

  • 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F/200C.
  2. Spray a glass baking dish with olive oil or nonstick cooking spray. (You can use a metal baking sheet, but it is more difficult to clean.)
  3. Use a food processor to chop the onion very finely and drain if there seems to be a lot of liquid.
  4. Crumble 1/2 cup feta cheese with a fork until finely crumbled.
  5. Place the minced meat in a bowl and add the finely chopped onion, finely crumbled feta, chopped garlic, egg, olive oil, red wine vinegar, Greek Oregano (affiliate link), Greek herbs (affiliate link), salt and pepper. Combine with your clean hands until all ingredients are well mixed.
  6. Use a tablespoon measuring cup to scoop out meat; Then roll it into balls with your hands and place them in rows in the baking dish.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes, after which you will see some liquid seeping out. (You can scoop out some of the liquid with a spoon if it bothers you; that’s what I usually do.)
  8. Turn the meatballs over and cook for another 10 minutes. Turn again and cook for another 5-10 minutes or until the meatballs are well browned and cooked through. (I would check one when you turn them the second time and use that to judge how much more cooking time is needed.)
  9. Greek meatballs are especially delicious when served with Tzatziki sauce.

Suggestions for a low-carb diet / low-glycemic diet / South Beach diet:
These Greek Meatballs would be approved for low-carb or Keto eating plans, or for any phase of the original South Beach Diet. (South Beach recommends using lean ground beef and a moderate amount of feta; low-carb and Keto diets prefer a bit more fat.)
