FPL notes: Moyes coy on Keane, Esteve + Newcastle injury updates

Continuing Gameweek 19 Scout Notes is a look at notable Fantasy Premier League (FPL) events at the City Ground and Turf Moor, where Michael Keane (£4.8m) missed and Bruno Guimaraes (£7.0 million).

Burnley, Everton, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest were in action.

No booking ban for Guimaraes, Anderson or Tarkowski

It was another away game in which Newcastle showed that they did not know how to respond properly to taking the lead.

Very early goals from Joelinton (£5.9m) – set up by a rarity Anthony Gordon (£7.4m) magic – and Yoane warned (£7.3m) put the Magpies two ahead. It should have been a comfortable night.

However, Jos Laurent (£4.8m) halved the deficit and hinted that Eddie Howe’s side could throw away points again. It was only late Martin Dubravka A £4.0 million mistake finally allowed Guimaraes to secure all three points.

The Brazilian’s sixth goal of the season followed three blanks and, in more good news, he avoided picking up a fifth yellow card before the threshold of Gameweek 19.

Also free from suspension concerns James Tarkowski (£5.5 million), Elliot Anderson (£5.3 million) and Nikola Milenkovic (£5.1 million).

Pope returned, Woltemade rested + others returned

This was the first competition match in which the previously injured Wissa got the nod Nick Woltemade (£7.4m). Upon arrival, rotation was apparently the plan, so the fact that the German was limited to a cameo wasn’t a complete shock.

Above: the efforts of Yoane Wissa, according to Statsbomb

Wissa scored four shots in the penalty area, three of which were Opta-defined big chances.

“He has done very well in the two starts he has had. I think he was excellent and led the line very well today. He has those sharp movements, movement from the back but also in the penalty area, he knows where the goal is.” – Eddie Howe on Yoane Wissa

Howe’s other three lineup changes brought in Joelinton, Harvey Barnes (£6.1 million) and Nick Pope (£5.1 million).

There were slight nerves then Lewis Hall (£5.3m) hurt his ankle, but the left-back recovered and was able to play all 90 minutes. Plus, it kind of sounds like it Tino Livramento (£4.9 million), Then Burns (£5.1 million), Sven Botman (£4.9 million) and Kieran Trippier (£4.9m) will be available soon.

‘I’m relieved to see him [Hall] get back up and play really well. Yeah, we’re hoping we can get some back for the next game. We have a group of three or four players who are quite close.” – Eddie Howe

Why didn’t Keane play?

In the other match, Forest defeated Everton with tries (21-11) and shots on target (6-3), but as on Saturday the Toffees squeezed out a clean sheet.

“Statistics don’t win games, I’ve been saying that for years. The myth of ten years ago said you have to have the ball to win games. It’s a myth, we all know that now. Everton didn’t do that, but they defended very well and hit us with two good goals from their point of view, very bad goals from our point of view.”

“We dominated the rest of the game with the ball, but it’s not good enough to dominate games. You have to find the edge to score goals.” – Sean Dyche

That’s six shutouts from nine occasions for David Moyes’ boys.

Good news for Tarkowski and six-save owners Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), but it’s a shame for the almost 800,000 people who bought Keane in the last week.

Keane, Carlos Alcaraz (£5.2 million) and Beto (£5.0m) made way for Saturday’s XI with the first two completely absent, but Moyes remains vague on the centre-back’s availability for Gameweek 20.

“I’m not giving any details about that at the moment. I’ll see how it goes in the coming days.” – David Moyes on Michael Keane and Carlos Alcaraz

At least there was a cameo appearance of it Jack Grealish (£6.5 million).

Meanwhile, Tarkowski made ten defensive contribution actions (DefCon) within half an hour. He finished with 19 of those, as seven teammates also received this two-point reward. Just like Anderson from Forest of course!

Months out for Wood

Afterwards Sean Dyche confirmed this Chris Wood (£7.2m) is nowhere near a comeback.

“It’s months, not weeks.” – Sean Dyche on Chris Wood

Wood’s knee surgery hasn’t been seen since Gameweek 8 and should now bring more FPL attention to low-priced forwards Igor Jesus (£5.8 million).

The Brazilian can now be seen as an alternative to that Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.9 million). While the latter has scored seven times in his last six, Jesus has just one goal from 11 consecutive starts.

Above: Players rank 10 to 19 shots in the penalty area according to Gameweeks, ahead of Thursday night’s action

That’s despite a record 31 box shots since Gameweek 10 began. Only five of these have been on target and one of them has been labeled as a huge chance.

What makes matters worse for Forest is that they face Aston Villa and Arsenal in their next three games. Although it was interesting to see for those who are tired of Dubravka or want an ultra-cheap goalkeeper combination John Victor (£4.0 million) starts again.

Esteve returns… and gets injured again

Until fairly recently, it posted two goals, two assists and various DefCon rewards Josh Cullen (£5.0m) as FPL’s best midfielder up to £5.0m.

On a night where a swing of 16 points resulted James Garner (£5.0 million) for this honor, Cullen’s knee injury was revealed to be season-ending. Also popular cheap defender Maxime Esteve (£3.9m) recovered but was injured after 14 minutes.

“We thought so, Maxi [Esteve] was fine and that had not been proven. As for Jos [Cullen]It’s obviously very disappointing for Josh because he has a significant knee injury so he won’t be with us for the rest of the season.” –Scott Parker

Zian Fleming (£5.3m) also failed to make the squad. However, we saw that we were not satisfied with an assist Armando Broja (£5.2m) will then become the second FPL forward this season to secure DefCon points.
